How far can you commute on an electric bike?
Most people use an electric bike to commute up to 20 miles, but in reality the bikes are capable of going much further than this on a single charge. Take the MN7VV for example, which is hugely popular in the Netherlands as a daily rider. It has a range of up to 130 miles in the lowest power assist mode (ideal for flatter cities), or up to 50 miles with maximum assist if you need to conquer a few hills on your way to work.
With these sorts of ranges, you only need to charge the battery up once or twice a week. Most batteries for electric bikes are removable and can be charged at work from a 3 pin standard socket. 6 hours of charge would usually give at least 80% of the capacity.
Most people with a single place of work (for example an office) commute 10 miles a day, meaning most eBikes will easily take you to work without any range anxiety. They're faster too. In 2019, the average speed of city traffic was just 10mph. Compare that to an electric bike which will comfortable assist you up to 15.5mph, and you'll keep moving when traffic is stopped.
If we take London for example, a 5 mile commute by electric bike would take roughly 20 minutes. By car, it would take at least 30 minutes.
By car, it would take at least 30 minutes.
Can the electric bike replace a car?
In short: yes. For commuting, the electric bike is a practical and cheaper alternative to a car, as well as public transport.
The average commute distance by car is 10 miles. In 2017, 68% of all trips made by car were under 5 miles. There is huge capacity for electric bikes to supplement or even replace a car, saving you money on fuel, tax and car insurance.
Looking at petrol alone, commuting 50 miles a week (10 miles day) will cost you about £8 a week in fuel, or £400 a year.
Can can eBike replace public transport?
Absolutely. For those commuting shorter distances by bus or light rail, the electric bike provide a healthy alternative that means you can avoid busy carriages and waiting around for replacements. You can get fit while riding to work too! Electric bikes count as exercise as it's assistance, not replacing the pedalling!
