ULEZ - Ultra Low Emissions Zone - Everything Motorcycles and Scooter Riders Need to Know
What is the ULEZ?
The ULEZ is a Ultra Low Emissions Zone that is being introduced to London. This zone will see a fee applied for vehicles that do not comply who enter into it. While the Zone currently will only affect central London to begin with, it will slowly expand over the next few years to a much wider area.
Why is it being brought in?
The ULEZ is being introduced as part of a raft of measures to help improve air quality in central London.
The idea behind the charges is to encourage adoption of low emission vehicles, NOT as a money making scheme. TFL explicitly say that the charges are there to speed up adoption of low emission vehicles.
When will it be brought in?
The date has been brought forward to 8th April 2019. The zone operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week meaning there is no way to get around or avoid ULEZ.
Does my vehicle comply to ULEZ?
Any scooter produced that does not comply to Euro 3 emissions standards will have to pay a charge.
All electric mopeds, motorbikes and scooters comply to ULEZ and all Euro standards as they give off 0 emissions. They will always be exempt from Emission based zoning in London.
Charges are based around the declared emissions of the vehicle, rather than a specific age limit. However, as a general rule anything registered with the DVLA after 2007 meets Euro 3.

How does ULEZ affect me?
If you have a motorbike, moped or scooter from before 2007 it is likely that you will need to pay the charges.
Because the charge is based on declared emissions, you can check if your vehicle will be affected now.
How much does ULEZ cost?
If your bike or vehicle does not comply, you will be charged £12.50 per day you are in the zone.
If you are commuting 5 days a week, that works out at at least £250 per month. Swapping your current petrol bike for an electric moped or motorbike will offer a pretty fast payback period, especially when taking into account fuel costs.
How to avoid ULEZ and Available Alternatives.
Going electric is the easiest way to future proof from any existing and future emissions-based fees. Technology has improved rapidly in the past 3 years to make electric mopeds a highly cost effective option.
Let us take an example and compare running costs. You are riding an average of 5 days and 100 miles a week into London, or around 20 miles per day.
Weeky ULEZ Charges | Petrol | Electric |
Mileage Costs | £4.50 | 0.46 |
ULEZ Charge | £62.50 | 0.00 |
